As some of you have heard, this past weekend, Evan Max passed away after an incident at the FTR Hare Scramble in Myakka City. Evan was a PeeWee rider, was 7yrs old, and lived in S. Florida. While Evan was not local to our area and was not known by most, if not all of us, his passing hits home like he was one of ours. The off road community and FTR provide us with events and activities that make us all feel like family.
This accident has really bothered me. I'm not quite sure why, as I have never met him nor was I even at the event. I feel its due to the fact that it happened during an activity that I love, at an event that I typically attend, I have 3 children of similar age and I regularly encourage them to get out and ride. I can't imagine this happening to our family. It would be devastating. I'm sure I speak for everyone, when I say the loss of such a young life makes it much harder to accept.
What it has made me appreciate is that we enjoy a sport that can change our lives in an instant, no matter how "in control" we feel we are. We all must ride smart and understand the risk we take. I encourage everyone to wear as much safety gear as they can afford, and when deciding on the quality/price of it, keep in mind what it's protecting. We all must look ahead and ride at a level that allows the best chance of avoiding the unexpected. This tragedy should also make all of us cherish the time we have with others and enjoy it as much as possible.
The FTR community is reaching out to collect donations for the Max family. RCDR will be donating $200 to the family on behalf of the club. I encourage everyone to consider donating as well. Donations are being handled through Off Road Racing Ministries (FTR Chaplain Andy Dickson). If you would like to donate, please send a check payable to "ORRM", 78 Dolphin Blvd, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082. Please be sure to write "Evan Max" in the memo line.
Please keep the Max family in your thoughts and prayers.
