Scott,
Your Hondas are absolute works of art, and they looked like they just rolled off the Showroom floor. Very nice work my friend.

Just started looking for the Penton. 72 Penton Six Day EEEEGAAADDDSSSS, someone strip those yellow plastics off that thing and restore it's dignity with alum. jobbies or at the very least white plastics. lol All joking aside, I'll keep my ears open. I've come across 2 or 3 since October when we started looking for one for a buddy. Ended up finding a not so great deal on one in Colorado that ended up being the candidate he bought. Those Sachs powered Penton's are getting a bit hard to find. Most are either ratted out and picked over or they are over the top for one that is in sorted running order. Which I'm sure you know already as your name looks familiar from some of the same classic/vintage offroad/mx circles on the interwebs that I frequent.

Beautiful resto job on that TL-125, Scott. I owned two of them in my lifetime. That muffler looks stock and must be very scarce; did the bike come with it? I hope you can track down a Penton. I raced moto against them in the early 70's on a 125 Pursang. I'll always remember them for their tinny exhaust sound....right after they passed me. But then they would miss shifts with that wonderful Sachs 11 speed transmission (6 gears and 5 neutrals).

I just blew coffee outta my nose laughing over that very true statement.

Yeah, but they all had at least one or two major quirks back then, at least until the Japanese got serious and Honda came out with the Elsinore. My Bultaco had a Femsa ignition and Amal carb, the worst of both worlds. When it wouldn't start it was a coin toss whether it was a spark or fuel issue.

Thanks guys for the compliments on the bikes. I did go all out on the CR and learned a lot as I sourced the items needed for the rebuild. On the TL I basically stripped it down to the frame and sanded and repainted everything including the tank using Duplicolor paint and alot of wet sanding, not perfect but nice. The engine was a good runner so I basically wire brushed it to get some of the oxidation off and painted the cases. Exhaust is fairly complete though missing the heat shield and stinger. The Penton was my first project about 5 years ago, yes it was tinny sounding and you had to give it the boot to shift, after finishing let it go to a guy down state. So after these last two bikes i'd like a shot at another Penton and this time as a keeper if it's the right bike. I have a few inquiries in at some of the usual sites and watch the POG site on a fairly regular basis. Shipping is a concern as that will jump the project price up a bit but for the right bike it is sometimes worth it.

Resurrecting a good thread. Finally had a chance to take out the RM/RMX 250 project I started six years ago & finished three weeks ago. It runs great & is definitely more fun in the tight stuff than my 530. Think I'll keep it a while.

Danny, It appears that all of your time and effort were well worth the wait. Your RM/RMX 250 looks great!

The RM needed new grips, but after too many years the bark busters' bolts wouldn't budge. So it was off to Cycle Gear for new hand guards & grips to go with the new Renthal bar I had laying around for just such an occasion. I had to cut the old bar to get the throttle tube off. Up next will be a skid plate, better foot pegs, & a cs sprocket guard.

I decided to change the graphics and seat cover on my CRF450X. It's from Throttle Jockey (2016 Johnny Campbell Racing Team design), and after installing it I really must say their product and quality is amazing.
Additionally, if you need a seat cover installed I used A&A Custom Auto Upholstery (2175 Kingsley Ave #304, Orange Park, FL 32073). I brought him the new cover and my seat (with the old cover already removed). He installed the new cover in 1-hour and only charged $20.00 cash out the door.

Along with the new graphics I installed a new FMF Power Bomb header as well (this replaced the FMF Mega Bomb header that was on my bike). I also wrapped it prior to installing it to ensure it was legal on both our lease and out at the Eagles Nest Enduro.

I agree. It looks much better. Never miss yours in a crowd. Nice to see the attention to detail. Really, really miss my 450R...but I've been hooked by the YZ bug.

My stock 500exc came with 0.45 fork springs. I upgraded them to 0.50 for my weight of 260lbs about one and a half years ago. Now I'm down to 245 and I'm trying to get a more plush feel. Instead of going back to .45 on both I just changed one to get an average of .475. I still waiting to ride the bike to see how it does.
Next I want to remove 20cc of fluid from each fork and see if that helps.
Really I'm just killing time until I have saved enough to pay Factory Connection to open everything up and say "oh no this is all wrong". LOL
Also put on a new chain, rear sprocket, and front tire.
Hopefully I will get to changing the oil later today.

Dave,
Good luck with the tweaks. Hopefully they'll do the trick until you're ready to pull the trigger at Factory Connection (FC).
I can tell you first-hand, you will absolutely love what FC will do to your suspension. Make sure to save enough to get the revalve service. This is where they rebuild your suspension to suit you (height and weight), your riding style, your ability level, and the terrain ridden and desired performance. It isn't cheap, but well worth the money IMHO.
I had purchased FC springs based just upon my weight for my CRF450X, but learned from the owner of FC that because I'm a tall rider (6' 4"), my height completely changed the suspension geometry which necessitated an even greater spring rate. Luckily, I hadn't installed them and FC swapped them out at no cost for the correct ones (forks and rear shock) during the revalve service.
The Factory Connection Team in Leesburg, FL (Brad Knight, Brandon Klevis, and Colin McGinnis) do an outstanding job with a 1-2 day turn-around. You can ship your suspension to them or hand deliver your suspension to them like I did.

As Barry will attest, I take pride in keeping my bike properly maintained and take the extra time necessary to keep it looking good. As far as never being missed in a crowd, those of us who ride a YZ, CRF, RM, or a KX (although greatly outnumbered) will always stand out in the virtual sea of KTM orange.

I've had way too much free time ever since my hand surgery last December. If you can't ride you might as well do the next best thing, install upgrades on your dirt bike.
The upgrades are as follows: (1) Enduro Engineering skid plate, (2) Rekluse Clutch Cover (to go with the Rekluse clutch I installed over a year and a half ago), (3) Pro Moto Billet Kickstand, (4) Lightspeed frame guards, (5) TM Designworks Baja Chain Slide-N-Glide , (6) TM Designworks Case Saver/Sprocket Cover, (7) new FMF silencer packing for my FMF Q4 muffler, and (8) IMS 3.2 gallon enduro series fuel tank (which is a huge increase in capacity over the stock 1.9 gallon tank).

Repacked the silencer on the RMX. It hadn't been sound checked, but just seemed a bit loud. It's an FMF Turbine Core 2. Has the spark arrestor riveted in place mid-pipe with both ends removable for service.
Pulled out the front first & it wasn't too bad. Packing was old but still there with only a little oil, and the pipe was pretty clean. Pulled off the back and...no packing. Not even a trace. Now, I don't know if this is how it came from the factory, but there is plenty of room for it. So I packed both ends & put it all back together. Unfortunately testing it will have to wait as the spark plug wire broke last week and is beyong repair. I'll have to order a new coil next week because it's a one piece deal.
More to come.
