Darrell Gilmore has authorized me to post about his accident.
When-On Sunday July 3
Where - on a numbered forest road in Ocala National Forest.(D. was riding legally).North side of the forest -Davenport area.
What- he was hit frontally by a sidexside which was barrelling down full speed on a forest road where sxs are forbidden. The sxs came out of a blind turn and there was no space or time to get off the road. It is basically a tunnel in walls of trees and dense tall bushes.
Luckily D was wearing all his protective gear, but the cattle-guard style bumper of the sxs smashed his left leg just below the knee. It was an open fracture with exposed bone and substantial loss of blood.
After a looong wait in the 95+ degrees weather, D was helicoptered to the trauma center in Ocala.
On a scale from 1 to 5, his surgeon told me that his injury was a 6! He showed me the xrays and it looked like the top of the shin bone had gone through a blender.
D. is lucky that the leg was saved. After two surgeries D. now has a long pin inside his tibia plus a lot of screws and staples to keep all this stuff together. Humpty Dumpty was put back together. It has been a very painful experience and the recovery time is expected to be long. But he will walk again and eventually should be able to shift gears with his left foot, once he regains feeling in it.
In recent years we have completely avoided the motorcycle-only trails of Ocala because they are narrow, blind and unsafe. We have essentially stuck to forest roads- but in the future we will avoid the North side of the forest altogether because it has been taken over by sxs and quads driven by people with zero common sense and no idea of where they are allowed to ride. Law enforcement has been a joke and there have been major accidents every weekend.
D. has now been moved to Life Care in Orange Park for three weeks of intensive physical therapy. He welcomes calls and visitors. His number is 352 644 1101 and his email dargil445@gmail.com But be warned: if his pain meds are wearing off, expect him to be GRUMPY !!!
Queen of Super Slow
P.S. I know what you want to ask.... Thankfully, the bike is fine.
