A reminder for those who will NOT be riding in Ocala the weekend of February 16 and 17: the annual re-enactment of the Battle of Olustee will take place both Saturday and Sunday pm.
Olustee is right off I-10 (exit 324) approximately 15 miles east of Lake City and 15 miles west of Macclenny. Round numbers.
The re-enactment takes place close to where we usually park for riding (Cobb Camp).
This event is one of the major re-enactments of Civil War battles, and a great opportunity to experience over 1,000 re-enactors in period-correct apparel with all the tents, weapons, horses, carriages, tools and paraphernalia of a time long gone. It is interesting and a ton of fun. Suitable for families and kids.
It is possible to ride Osceola on Sunday morning*, leave vehicles and bikes at my place in Olustee and attend the event in the afternoon.
The Battle starts at 1:30 on Sunday and at 3:30 on Saturday. Give yourself at least one hour prior to the battle to visit the displays and the encampment. You will be glad you did.
Those interested can park their vehicles at my place (very close to the battlefield) and I can drop them off and pick them up at the event site, saving parking fees, bus rides and long waits.
Anybody interested, contact me for times and directions.
* both tagged and tag-less. Both types of trails are in great shape right now.

+1 on what G said. Olustee is a very well done reenactment. Put on some comfortable shoes, take a bottle of water, and go visit. You can wander through the camps and talk to the soldiers, who are happy to explain their gear, tell you what they have to eat, etc. You can hear storytellers and listen to music. During the actual battle reenactment, dirt flies as horses thunder by...trees fly as cannon fire explodes. We went for years before I found out through a genealogist that we had an ancestor in the 47th NY Volunteers (Infantry), one of the units that was there in the battle. Budget a few bucks extra if you take kids; they will love poking around in the sutler's (provisioners) tents, even if all they find is a piece of rock candy. If you've never been, it really is a neat thing.
