If you are interested in doing the prerun here's an estimate what it will cost you: The 1000 is on a third Friday of November every year. Contingency row and inspections is on Thursday and it is something to see. The race starts at 6 am on Friday. If flying to San Diego, tickets are around $450. We'd need to rent a four door Tacoma that can be taken to Mexico which is about $300 for a week. I can haul 12 bikes on my car hauler, I spend about $2,500 for gas and take donations. Two satellite phones for a week are $500. The race is going to be a loop race next year, about 850 miles which means that prerunning the whole course will take four days and you'd have to ride up to 250 miles per day. Hotel rooms are $50 to $70 per night for 2 people. Gas costs about the same as here, you can figure how much your bike uses and the Tacoma would use 4-5 tanks. Food costs the same or less. If flying to San Diego the trip would take 7 days, if driving in the RV about 12 days. AS far as your bike, most bikes are fine. You need big enough tank to get a minimum of 80 miles. I f you can only get 80 miles you'll end up carrying a gallon of gas every now and then. You do not need lights, sun comes up around 6 am and sets around 530 pm at that time which gives plenty of time to complete 250 miles. You need fresh chains, sprockets, bearings, tires and ultra heavy duty tubes.
